Types of Moss for Decorating: A Wholesale Buyer’s Guide

November 5, 2026

Natural Preserved Reindeer Moss

Moss is one of the most useful materials in natural décor. It covers mechanics, softens hard edges and makes almost any arrangement look like it grew there. But “moss” covers a lot of different products, and picking the wrong one can mean a terrarium that looks flat or a moss wall that dries out and crumbles. This guide walks through the main types of moss we sell, what each one looks like, and the jobs it does best.

Preserved, air-dried or natural: what’s the difference?

Before choosing a variety, decide how the moss needs to perform.

  • Preserved moss has been treated so it stays soft, flexible and green for years without water or sunlight. It’s the best choice for indoor décor, moss walls, framed art and retail products.
  • Air-dried moss is dried naturally with no preservative. It’s lightweight and inexpensive, with a more muted, organic color, and it’s ideal for crafts, fillers and dry arrangements.
  • Natural (live-harvested) moss is best for living terrariums and garden projects where the moss needs to keep growing.

Sheet moss

Preserved green sheet moss

Sheet moss grows in flat, carpet-like mats that peel away in large pieces. Because it lies flat and cuts easily, it’s the fastest way to cover soil, floral foam, tabletops and display risers. Florists use it to hide mechanics in containers, and retailers use it to dress shelves and window displays. Choose natural sheet moss for an organic look, or preserved sheet moss when it needs to stay green indoors for months.

Mood moss

Preserved mood moss with soft, mounded texture

Mood moss grows in soft, rounded cushions rather than flat sheets. Those mounds add depth and a natural forest-floor feel, which makes it a designer favorite for terrariums, dish gardens, centerpieces and moss walls with dimension. Natural mood moss holds moisture well for living terrariums, while preserved mood moss keeps its lush green color with no watering at all.

Reindeer moss

Preserved reindeer moss in chartreuse

Despite the name, reindeer moss is actually a lichen. It has a spongy, coral-like texture and takes color beautifully, which is why it’s the go-to material for moss walls, framed moss art, wreaths and modern floral designs. Preserved reindeer moss stays soft and pliable and comes in Natural, Spring Green and Chartreuse. Air-dried reindeer moss has subtle earthy tones and is lighter and firmer, a good fit for terrariums and naturalistic displays.

Tip: keep preserved reindeer moss soft

Preserved reindeer moss can stiffen in very dry air. Keep it away from heating vents and direct sun, and if it starts to feel crisp, a few days in normal indoor humidity will usually soften it again.

Spanish moss

Natural air-dried Spanish moss

Spanish moss is light and stringy, with a soft gray-green drape. It’s perfect for tucking around potted plants, lining hanging baskets, softening wreaths and topiaries, and adding a whimsical, draping texture to event décor. Choose natural Spanish moss for its classic silvery color, or dyed Spanish moss in Hunter Green, Basil or Apple to match a design.

Sphagnum moss

Bulk sphagnum mountain moss from Oregon

Sphagnum is the working moss of the group. Its long, absorbent strands hold many times their weight in water, so growers use it for orchids, hanging baskets, plant propagation and terrarium layers. Our sphagnum moss comes from Oregon and Florida and is sold by the 25 lb bale or a full pallet.

Lichens for contrast

Chartreuse wolf lichen

Lichens add color and texture that moss alone can’t. Black lichen has a ruffled, paper-like surface in dramatic gray-black. Wolf lichen brings a vivid chartreuse pop, and grandfather’s beard adds wispy, hanging movement. Mix a little into moss designs to keep them from reading as one flat green.

Which moss should you choose?

  • Covering soil, foam or surfaces: sheet moss
  • Terrariums and centerpieces with depth: mood moss
  • Moss walls and framed art: preserved reindeer moss, with mood moss for dimension
  • Planters, baskets and draping accents: Spanish moss
  • Growing and potting: sphagnum moss
  • Contrast and texture: black, wolf or grandfather’s beard lichen
